Retirement village robberies
FEATHERBROOKE — Senior residents have been vulnerable to a scourge of robberies and theft.
Senior residents at the Featherbrooke Hills Retirement Village have been plagued by a recent spate of robberies and housebreakings.
Dave Toll (78) said that he was recently woken up at around 2am by a noise outside. Toll initially thought the noise was one of the neighbours coming home.
“After a while I thought I heard someone inside so I got up and went to look around but I didn’t see anything. In the morning, when I went out for my walk, I wanted to unlock the door and I noticed the keys were missing and the door was not locked.”
Toll said the window bars had also been pulled out and taken. The culprits had made off with his car, door and garage keys. “We had to put in new locks and replace the bars, and our children put in a new security system for us,” he continued. “What they highlight here at the property is the security features, but when I reported the incident not much was done by the management.”
The property’s management refused to give comment and said that they would have to meet with the Homeowner’s Association.
Toll said that a few days after the incident, a couple was tied up but luckily, not hurt. “They also broke into the apartment next to us, broke the window and stole the woman’s bag. They have broken into four places now,” he added.
Toll continued that he believes the suspects climbed over the wall and covered the electric fence to gain access to the property.
In recent months, complexes and townhouses have been vulnerable to robberies and criminal activity.
Honeydew Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs said that there have been a number of housebreakings and robberies at complexes in a couple of areas.
