One team one dream

RUIMSIG – Maragon's hockey teams win D12 league against stiff competition.

The 1st team hockey side at Maragon School in Ruimsig were victorious in the D12 league finals on 29 May.

The boys team beat Hoërskool Florida 3–1 in a nail-biting game and remained undefeated in all the D12 league games. The players represented the district at the inter-district tournament and further rounds of Southern Gauteng provincial trials.

Coach Michael Lazenby said it has been a great season with a great team of boys.

“The boys have built up nicely throughout the season and have learned and grown a lot,” he said. “On the days of the tournament, they understood what needed to be done, upped their game and delivered. They showed maturity and eagerness.”

In addition to the D12 district league, the Maragon boys’ hockey teams also participated in the Southern Gauteng league where they played against schools including Parktown Boys’ High School, Waterstone College, Monument Academy, Jeppe High School for Boys, Rand Park High School and Bryanston High School.

The team is now gearing up to play the winning team from another district when the games commence in August. Lazenby said that coaching the team has only reiterated the strength of hockey as a sport.

“We are just going to grow from strength to strength as a team, and get higher in the league. It has been a pleasure to coach the boys,” he concluded.
