Barnswallows does healthy living

CONSTANTIA KLOOF — Healthy and organic living encouraged for parents of special needs children.

Director of Barnswallows and Swift Academy, René Testa hosted and presented a healthy living and food preparation morning on 16 May in Constantia Kloof.

Testa said the main objective of the presentation was to bust misconceptions that preparing healthier meals is too difficult.

“Because we work with special needs children, parents and caregivers need to be more aware of what they put into their bodies. There are so many toxins in the environment and often in the food we eat and all of that lands right on our children,” she explained.

The Barnswallows and Swift Academy are all green baby zones, meaning that there are no toxins on the premises. That is why it is essential that parents are more aware of what they put in and on their babies and their homes. What is practised at school needs to be reciprocated at home.

The NGO only feeds the children wholesome foods and Testa said they do not use any baby products, “We only use olive and coconut oil on the babies.”

René hosts these talks monthly and said with the next one on 20 June, she will focus on gut health and gentle detoxing.

The Swift Academy is a new addition to the Barnswallows family and offers one-on-one attention to assist the children overcome developmental delays, including fetal alcohol syndrome, Down’s syndrome and cerebral palsy.
