Fresh from the press, Dave Young releases a book
WELTEVREDEN PARK – Local poet Dave Young makes his dream a reality as he releases a book with a collection of his poems.
How many people in the world have hidden talents they have yet to discover?
The number is uncountable. There are those people, however, who tap into their creativity much later in life.
One such person is Dave Young.
A Weltevreden Park resident, Young lived most of his life with his talent for poetry lying dormant.
He began writing his memoirs for his children and grandchildren.
“All my life I’ve been busy and never had the time to write, I started writing my memoirs after retirement,” shared Young.
Five years back he began writing poetry inspired by his personal experiences, with a contemporary twist. “I write just about anything and everything but I try to relate my poems with the current happenings.”
Young’s love of poetry was shadowed by an apprehension to share his craft with others. “I always wondered if people would love my poems.”
He was also somewhat computer shy, an obstacle he soon overcame.
He has written over 150 poems to date and he always had a dream to have them published. Recently, the 90-year-old managed to make his dream a reality when he had his first book published. The book consist of 111 poems that the poet wrote and he believes that this was his best offering. “In this book I only included poems that I think are the best. I also believe all my poems have a message for everyone, publishing them was one way of sending them out there to people.”
Young gives credit for this achievement and talent to his creator. “God is the one who gives me all these ideas in my head.” Hard work is what he puts into each poem that he writes and shares that he at least takes a week to any latest offering that he decides to pen down.
The proud father and grandfather said he always looks forward to the Friday dinner that he has every week with his two sons, daughters-in-law and four grandchildren. “They are really a blessing and I’m thankful for the support they always give me,” concluded Young.
All his poems begin with the words; “Please remember, don’t forget,” as remembering is what he wants from people and said he finds the word ‘forget’ easy to rhyme with all the other words.
