HONEYDEW – Friend hopes to make it to the Moto Grand Prix one day.

Grade 8 pupil at Northcliff High School and Honeydew resident William Friend hopes to achieve big things in the motorcycle racing world.

According to his father Matthew, his son has been involved in the sport since the age of five and he is currently competing in the Super Junior National Challenge.

“His most recent race took place at the Phakisa Raceway in Welkom on 22 March. This was the inaugural race for a new class which saw the introduction of a new KTM RC 390 road bike. All of these races are performed on tarred surfaces as is found at the various racetracks across the country,” Matthew said.

He added that his son won the race in dramatic circumstances.

“In heat one the clutch broke on the starting line and William had to start from the pit lane, finishing second in the race. Heat two, was a closer competition as a two-way battle developed between William and Dorren Loureiro who played cat-and-mouse until the last lap, when William took the overall win for the day.”

His mother Louise commented on his training regime and said he is very fit physically as he plays rugby as well.

“He works hard every day and his big dream is to make it to the Moto Grand Prix one day.”

Matthew thanked the sponsors who helped William thus far but added that the young racer is still looking for a new sponsor. “If anyone wants to assist then they can contact my wife for more details.”

“His next big race is at Killarney Racetrack on 18 May and this is the National Championships. He will have to be focused as there will be eight rounds in the series,” concluded Louise.
