4 February is World Cancer Day. According to the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) 8.2 million people die from cancer worldwide every year. Furthermore, the global number of deaths from cancer will increase by nearly 80 per cent in 15 years, with most occurring in low and middle-income countries.
World Cancer Day aims to reduce the risk of cancer-related deaths by uniting people in the fight against cancer and recognising that individuals, organisations and governments can play an important role in raising awareness and educating others regarding the disease.
This year’s theme Not Beyond Us focuses on taking a positive and proactive approach to the fight against cancer, highlighting that solutions do exist regarding early detection and cancer care.
“World Cancer Day is important because the global cancer epidemic is huge and set to rise,” says Cansa’s acting CEO Elize Joubert.
