Keep the wheels spinning for muscular dystrophy
MULDERSDRIFT – Cradlestone Mall played host to a Wheel-A-Thon that took place to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation of South Africa.
The Muscular Dystrophy Foundation of South Africa held a Wheel-A-Thon on 30 and 31 January and on 1 February where pupils had the chance to experience what it is like to be confined to a wheelchair.
Organiser Rae Bagus said, “We set up a stationary wheelchair where the pupils had to see how many times they could spin the wheel in half an hour and we collected R30 every half an hour for the foundation.”
She explained that the foundation is a non-profit organisation that supports people affected with muscular dystrophy and neuromuscular disorders and endeavours to improve the quality of their members lives.
Grade 10 to 12 pupils from the King’s School West Rand helped to raise funds for the foundation. Marketing officer at the school Bronwyn Barnard said, “The pupils from King’s School kept our name high by helping out. Their passion and dedication on collecting money for the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation this past weekend shone through. We are proud of their efforts and community mindedness.”
Bagus concluded,“We are still unsure as to how much money we have managed to collect as we are still counting everything up. We want to thank the supporters and the pupils for taking time to come and assist us with creating awareness for a worthy cause.”
