Healthy lunch ideas for modern parents

HONEYDEW – Don't lose sleep over what to pack in lunch boxes with these great ideas.

With the busy lives that we are prone to live in our society, you would be forgiven for overlooking a few essentials, especially during the back-to- school rush.

Making school lunches for your little one should not be one of those things that fall off the grid in the midst of trying to make everything perfect for school days. You do not have to spend hours in the kitchen preparing wholesome school meals, but with that said, don’t skimp on the health factor.

The best thing to do is to pack school lunches the day before to save time in the morning. Keep in mind that when they are at school, kids play around and so will need to refuel on that energy with healthy meal ideas. Incorporate fruits, dried or frozen (depending on the season), as a healthy alternative.

Use carbohydrates such as pasta, rice and potatoes as a base when planning meals. The filling should be high in protein including lean beef or chicken. Protein can also be found in dairy products such as cheese. Lunch for growing minds should include at least two portions of cooked vegetables or salad.

Liquids are important to keep the young bodies hydrated. This can be juice (diluted or not) or reduced fat milk. Water should always be packed in the lunchbox.

When it comes to snacks there are great ideas to take into consideration. Fruits are great for snacking on. Crackers or wheat snacks taste great and are easy to pack in the lunch box. Add a dairy into the snack mix with low fat yoghurt or cheese sticks.

All round, it is important that your child gets the essential food groups needed for a healthy diet. A well-balanced diet plan not only assists in the classroom, but out on the sports field as well.
