Rounds of excitement from first time scholars

WELTEVREDEN PARK — The wet weather did not dampen any spirits on the first day of school.

Thousands of pupils went back to school on 14 January, including a couple of first timers.

Welridge Academy in Weltevreden Park welcomed just over a hundred new Grade 1s to the primary school. With their anxious parents in tow, excited chatter among the corridors could be heard from outside.

The little ones were more than eager to get into their respective classes and make some new friends. The parents, however, were just a little more hesitant to let go; taking pictures of their children and planted multiple kisses on little cheeks.

Ashleigh Walker, who is a Grade 1 educator at the school assured parents that their little Grade 1s were in good hands and they were welcome to call and check up on them.

“The kids are very excited, a bit nervous but certainly excited for the first day at ‘big school’. The parents are just a little more anxious and nervous but we all have such a big role to play on their first day at school and overall schooling experience.”

Walker, comforted the classroom of parents by telling them about what would be expected from both pupils and parents. “We will communicate on a weekly basis and there will be regular assessments for the children. Right now, you can take a moment for some pictures before saying good-bye,” she concluded.
