Dos and Donts when it comes to strays

ROODEPOORT – SPCA's pound status means it has the authority to take in stray animals.

A stray animal is classified as an animal that has wandered away from its home into the streets. The Roodepoort SPCA states that any animals that are found wandering along the streets should, in terms of the local bylaws, be taken to ‘the pound’ which is exactly what the SPCA qualifies as.

“The Roodepoort SPCA has what is generally known as ‘pound status’, meaning that it can legally take in stray animals. In terms of its agreement with the local Council, animals handed in must be kept for a prescribed period and if reclaimed by their owners, a fee must be paid. The fee is determined and regulated by the Municipality,” said Mandi Cattanach, manager at the organisation.

“Animals that are not reclaimed by their legal owners during the ‘pound period’ may then be placed for adoption and it is illegal for any person to take in a lost, stray or wandering animal.”

She added that holding onto stray animals is irresponsible, as well as a contravention of the bylaws, and action can be taken against any person or organisation doing so.

“Please feel free to bring in stray animals as it may help its owners to locate their beloved pet a bit easier.”
