She was walking to catch a taxi as usual and didn’t know that she would end up being an armed robbery victim.
Ruimsig resident Njabulo Sibisi is in a traumatic state after all she was robbed of her belongings. She was on her way to work on Thursday 11 December and said she believes her alleged robbers are taking advantage of the festive season. “They seem to be out to make a quick buck because they know people have their bonuses now.
Sibisi explained that it was just after 5am as she was walking on Van Dalen Road approaching Peter Road. “A car came driving slowly toward me, and approached me as if they were looking for a specific school. After pointing out the place, they reversed back and parked in front of it.”
She said her instinct told her to cross the road to the opposite side and she did just that. “Thereafter, they U-turned right next to me. They jumped out, two of them, the driver holding a concealed gun. After swearing, they demanded my phone, bag and lunch bag, leaving me with nothing.”
According to Sibisi, the alleged perpatrators were driving a grey/white two-door VW Polo with registration number DT 30 BF GP, and travel in groups of three men, with a female sometimes in tow.
“The culprits are coloured, with one of the men looking more of an Indian mix with a L-shaped gold tooth in front, a protruding prominent nose, and eyes that are narrowly close to each other,” explained Sibisi.
She said as she was still trying to figure out what actually occured, a kind Samaritan, who had witnessed everything, reversed back and gave her a lift to Honeydew Police Station.
The eyewitness to the robbery, who asked to remain anonymous, said there was a huge increase in armed robberies in Ruimsig. “I was shocked to see in the newspaper last week when the Honeydew Police said crime is down.”
She blamed lack of police visibility in their suburb for the spate of armed robberies. “You hardly see any police vehicle patrolling in Ruimsig. Whether it’s during the day or at night,” said the eyewitness.
Sibisi said her other friend was also victim in a similar way a few weeks back, also in Ruimsig. “My friend ended up in hospital with a broken jaw because the robbers assaulted her.”
Honeydew Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs is still to comment on the matter.
