Students let their hard work do the dancing

MULDERSDRIFT – Dancers, young and old show, what they are made off at the annual prize giving and dance championships.

More than 250 hip hop dance students set the stage on fire for the annual prize giving and dance championships held for the Mario Gomes Hip Hop Dance Academy.

The different crews in the academy showed off jaw dropping moves on 22 November for judges and doting parents before being awarded with certificates during the prize giving. The dancers were ranked in different categories including most improved dancer, hardest worker and overall best dancers for both males and females.

Boasting a number of national and international championships in different age groups, there were more than enough accolades being handed out to the proud dancers, including Khaya Dhladla and Terrence Nkwatshirema who are the currently International Dance Organisation (IDO) world champions.

“This event will show what each of the dancers learnt throughout the year and they can bring that on stage in their dancing,” said choreographer and owner of the dance academy, Mario Gomes. “It is exclusive to the dancers at Mario Gomes Hip Hop Dance Academy (MGHHDA) and they compete among each other. This is also the first time we included a kids battle for dances between 6-11 years old.”

The judges included Wesley Grainger and Anuq Wilson, who are certainly no strangers to the hip hop dance industry and the audience was even treated to a surprise freestyle from Wilson, who is a choreographer in her own right.

The event was a definite way to whet the appetites of future dancers and parents looking to enroll their children. With 30 seconds on the clock, the dancers wasted no time impressing the judges for the bragging rights of ‘Champ of Champs’.
