Children should be seen and not hurt

JOBURG — Universal Children's Day highlights the plight of children who are often subjected to the most violent abuse.

International Children’s Day is held on 20 November and helps to raise awareness around the protection and understanding of children globally.

The day was first established in 1954 by the United Nations Assembly for the mutual exchange and love among children, with actions that would benefit and promote the welfare of children from across the world.

Children’s Day also aims to highlight abused children who succumb to violence around the world. Several countries still make use of child labourers and are subjected to unsafe environments and armed conflicts.

According to the International Labour Organisation, there are currently 153 million children between five and 14 years old that are forced into child labour.

Today, every person is encouraged to pledge their promise to protect and promote the right of children all around the world who are unjustly deprived of their basic rights.
