South Africans – hoot for change?
JOBURG — South Africans are taking to public roads to voice their concerns with the powers that be.
Two residents from Pietermaritzburg have joined the trend of airing one’s concerns on a busy road, made famous by the Cell C service banner on Beyers Naudé.
A banner put up on Mayor’s Walk Bridge in Pietermaritzburg read “!!!Hoot!!! Zuma must go!” and led this to a number of motorists hooting hysterically while stuck in rush hour traffic.
The banner caused quite a stir on social media with several people openly talking about their dislike of President Jacob Zuma, while some have come to his defence as president of the country.
President Zuma’s popularity decreased substantially after he had spent more than R200 million of taxpayers’ money on upgrades at his Nkandla home. More recently, statistics from the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) showed South Africa has dropped 34 places since 2001 to 75th out 125 countries in the world. Many South Africans feel that issues, including unemployment, crime and poverty have only gotten worse in recent years under Zuma’s leadership.
What do you think of the banner that was put up in Pietermaritzburg?
How do you feel about President Zuma’s leadership?
Is airing our dirty laundry the best way in igniting change?
