Local a Capella group, The Soil have definitely beaten the music industry’s “sophomore curse” with the release of their second album Nostalgic Moments on 22 September 2014, which reached No. 1 on iTunes .
Nostalgic Moments shows of the trio’s growth both vocally and lyrically and includes more variation to Mr P’s already impressive beatboxing.
The album keeps you in a trance of melodies and perfectly timed rhythms from the intro to the very last song with influences from the Sophiatown era; without going too far off from the Kasi Soul sound of their first album.
During the exclusive listening session on 18 September, Native Rhythms’ COO Sipho Sithole said the album was a world-class production that will take the international stages by storm.
“We plan on submitting this album for the Grammys; that is how confident we are about it. It has been doing very well on iTunes and not under the African music category but under the pop music category, which is really amazing”
Speaking of international stage, the trio left for New York on 7 October to perform at the Apollo Theatre. This is their second appearance at the world-renowned theatre, last year they performed to a sold out crowd.
The group will join fellow SA artists including Tumi (of Tumi and the Volume), Simphiwe Dana and Toya Delazy for the Africa Now Festival.
Buhle, Ntsika and Luphindo have certainly broken any thoughts about the limitations of their harmonies, voices and musical talent, having started a huge international following since the release of their self-titled debut album. The Trio will kicked off their UK tour from 14 October to 7 November, which forms part of the AfroVibes Festival. As part of their impressive line-up, the group will also feature performances with choirs from different cities and teach them a thing or two about South African celebration songs.
With collaborations from Grammy-award winning a Capella group Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Mostwako rapper Khuli Chana, Nostalgic Moments has reached Gold status, a jaw-dropping suite for an album that has been out for just a couple of weeks.
