ROODEPOORT – Councillor explains that if everyone works together they can make Ward 89 a better place.

Ward 89 is a large ward that covers suburbs from Northcliff all the way to Constantia Kloof. Ward Councillor Ingrid Reinten describes the ward as a bustling area in Johannesburg that has a mix of business properties, residential properties and two agricultural holdings in Allen’s Nek and Panorama.

“The Ward covers Northcliff from Mahogany Street to King Street, a part of Fairland, Constantia Kloof North, Allen’s Nek and Panorama, and a small part of Weltevreden Park and Quellerina.”

She explained that the Fairland Police Station is the one main police station in the ward.

“Schools that we have in the ward are: Agape Christian School, Panorama Primary School, Cliffview Primary School, Brandcliff House, Redford House Primary School and Laerskool Fairlands.”

Reinten explained that the major arterial roads in the ward are: 9th and 14th avenues, Hendrik Potgieter and Weltevreden roads. “We have no trains that run through our area and buses run only during peak hours, plus we have taxis that are used as forms of public transport and this has resulted in four illegal taxi ranks in Ward 89. The illegal ranks run along Hendrik Potgieter Road and along 14th Avenue and one or two smaller shopping centres also have illegal taxi ranks.”

She added that the ward has various road and infrastructure problems that need to be addressed by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).

“There is ground water problems on most of our main routes and in our suburbs; we have various potholes that need to be repaired by JRA. We also have problems with road markings and the defacing of our bridges and traffic signs.”

She said the ward continues to struggle with various bylaw problems that range from illegal street trading to illegal connections and noise pollution, as well as illegal advertising and vagrants that live on open spaces, which also contributes to an increase in burglaries.

Reinten concluded and said, “We have our problems in the ward that need to be addressed but if we all work together and log all of the complaints and follow them up with the entities involved, then we can help to make this ward a better place.”
