Help find missing ‘Pappa Sauer’

WITPOORTJIE – The Sauer family is desperately looking for Herman Sauer, who went missing on 20 September.

Janie Sauer and family are looking for 53-year-old Herman Sauer, who went missing on 20 September.

According to Janie, her father went missing while she, her mom and her sister had gone out to the shops.

“He didn’t leave in one of our vehicles so he either left on foot or was picked up by someone,” Janie retold.

She also shared that Herman is currently undergoing treatment for depression, which he was diagnosed with after being retrenched and struggling to find employment.

With this in mind, the family has considered a worst case scenario.

“He furthermore took all my mother’s prescription medication including sleeping tablets, anti-anxiety medication and all her anti-depressants. In this regard, we fear greatly that he might have attempted suicide somewhere, but we have been unable to confirm that. He has no known friends or associates, and if he went out, it was with family as he has a history of alcoholism but has been clean for the past eight months.”

Having to live with the reality of not being able to see or speak to him as usual and still remaining hopeful, Herman’s memory is fresh in Janie’s mind.

“My dad is a fantastic dad. Nothing was ever too much to ask and no matter what the circumstance, he always gave us his best.”

She said all her and her sister’s friends refer to Herman as “Pappa Sauer”, because he is as much a dad to them as he is to his own children.

“All our friends are always welcome in our house and he is a close friend and confidant to most of them, and would be invited to all their birthdays [celebrations] as well. He is a very friendly person and is well loved by all who know him.”

Janie owes much of who she and her sister have become to their father, who has offered them support in all their ventures.

The Sauer family cannot provide information about what Herman was wearing on the day he disappeared, as he had changed from the clothes they last saw him in.

“We really miss him a lot and not knowing where he is and whether he is safe and well or not is driving us mad.”
