The great race

RUIMSIG - Local talent Rene Kalmer will be racing at the upcoming SPAR Women's challenge on 12 October

Runners are gearing up to compete at the Spar Women’s Challenge on 12 October at the Wanderers Club in Johannesburg.

The Spar Women’s Challenge will see women from all walks of life competing for the 5km and 10km race.

Ruimsig resident René Kalmer is very enthusiastic about the race challenge. “It is a great series that unites runners of all ages and spectrums of the community and motivates new runners to make their race debuts,” said the top runner.

For Kalmer, the Spar series has always been a highlight on her running calendar. “Although I’ve been training for the Berlin Marathon this year, I’ve enjoyed all the Spar races so far and am happy with my achievements.

Kalmer started running at the age of nine and she has never looked back.

“Being a professional athlete motivates me and, of course, good results are a big motivation – but I also enjoy the amazing lifestyle and experiences that come with the package.”

She added that, “Nowadays, I use future events as my biggest inspiration, always wanting to better myself.”

At the upcoming race challenge, Kalmer will be returning from the Berlin Marathon and hopes to be among the front runners competing for the top position.

“Johannesburg is my hometown race and I am always looking to give it my all and enjoy the support of the local crowd,”she said.

October is Breast Cancer Month, and a portion of proceeds from the race will go to Reach for Recovery – a support group for women with breast cancer.

Entries for the race are open till 5 October, however, late entries will be accepted between 9 and 12 October.

Details: Entry forms are available from all Spar, SuperSpar and KwikSpar stores, or online at www.spar.co.za or www.sparwomensrace.co.za
