Young dancers deliver explosive moves

ROODEPOORT – Hip-hop dance showcase closed off to a roaring encore at the Roodepoort Theatre.

The Roodepoort Theatre was abuzz with excitement and anticipation as family and friends attended the Mario Gomes Hip Hop dance academy on 19 September.

Dancers from as young as four years old took part in a series of impeccably choreographed sequences that exposed the hip-hop culture as something that brings people together, through the love of dancing.

The two-hour showcase brought a variety of dances including contemporary dance, krump and hip-hop against the backdrop of graffiti walls and a make-shift scrapyard.

Dressed in identical outfits, the dancers showed near-perfect precision and execution of high flying moves, popping and locking their way across the stage.

Melissa Mourao choreographed the contemporary dances for the girls, with one performance easily based on a fairy fantasy with soft lighting and pink outfits. Another performabce resembled something out of Swan Lake.

Mario Gomes certainly proved why his students are ranked among the best in South Africa.
