Sector 3 crime concerns residents

STRUBEN'S VALLEY - Crime still high in Sector 3 says CPF chairperson Daniel Smith.

At a recent CPF Sector 3 meeting the crime figures and impact of crime came under the discussion.

According to CPF Sector 3 chairperson Daniel Smith, the three crimes most prevalent in the area are culpable homicide, robbery with aggravating circumstances and residential burglary/ housebreaking.

“Common robbery, assault, hi-jacking and robbery at businesses are also still high while it was indicated that the two types of vehicles that were stolen the most during the months of July and August were Volkswagens and Toyotas,” Smith added.

After the crime briefs, a resident asked about the lack of actual crime figures per suburb while ‘high’ or ‘low’ is no indication of the seriousness or otherwise of the incidence of crime to which Smith replied, “The answer to the question is simple as crime stats are released only once a year by the Minister of Police.”

He added that the security companies keep their own crime stats and he suggested that they collaborate and make their own figures available to the CPF and the police.

Mike Howis, a resident in the area, expressed his concerns about crime in general and mentioned that the lack of visible policing makes it easier for criminals to commit crimes. He added that there needs to be a better co-operation between the security companies and the police service. Smith assured him that the relationship is excellent as they regularly conduct joint operations in addition to monthly meetings between representatives of security companies and the police service.

Smith concluded and said, “Residents in Sector 3 should call one of the two Sector 3 patrol vehicles on either 071 675 7103 or 071 675 7107 in case of an emergency.”
