Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens ready for Bird Fair tomorrow

POORTVIEW - Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens will host the Sasol Bird Fair this weekend.

Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens will host the Sasol Bird Fair starting tomorrow, 7 and 8 June.

According to Nikki MacCartney, the Sasol Bird Fair is the biggest of its kind in Southern Africa. “It attracts birding enthusiasts from all over South Africa,” she said. MacCartney said the bird walks have been finalised and details will be available at the BirdLife South Africa and SANBI stands throughout the day over the weekend. “There will be a number of walks and we have secured a good number of guides, with more in standby if the walks prove very popular. We will have Geoff Lockwood doing walks on the Sunday and there is the Black Eagle project at the garden and they will be doing talks about the eagles along with walks to see the birds,” she added.

She also said exhibitors are looking forward to this event and a few more optics companies have confirmed their attendance. “The theme of the 2014 Fair is Going Inland to Save our Seabirds and the fair aims to get bird-watchers together to both celebrate birds and to have a good time while heightening a public interest towards the need for protecting birds and their habitats and to support bird conservation projects,” said MacCartney. She said the bird fair is focused on cultivating bird lovers and enjoyment of nature, and will form an important component of Sasol Birdlife SA National Bird Week.
