Don’t mess with our Waste – Afriforum
JOBURG - Afriforum launches yet another campaign to keep the country clean on 29 May.
AfriForum launched another national campaign called Don’t mess with our waste on 29 May and involves more than 100 AfriForum branches across South Africa.
According to Julius Kleynhans, Head of Environmental Affairs at AfriForum, the civil rights organisation is expecting more than 100 landfill environmental audits to be conducted throughout the country. “These environmental audits will capture the necessary information and evidence to see whether local authorities are complying to the minimum waste management requirements to ensure a safe environment and responsible management to ensure that municipalities don’t mess with our waste.
AfriForum is of the opinion that very few municipalities are complying to waste regulations and that there is a lack of accountability in local authorities to manage waste appropriately. According to the AfriForum team, municipal landfill sites should contain waste management licences which guide them to manage general waste at a minimum standard so that environmental, health and safety issues are kept to a minimum. AfriForum will continue to monitor the audited landfill sites. The team also reported that if standards are not upheld, they will put pressure on the municipality to step in. If nothing is done, they will take the necessary steps to ensure that a solution is found. AfriForum concluded by saying, they will not allow mismanagement any longer and alternatives for proper waste management in South Africa are being investigated.
AfriForum will release the campaign results at the end of June 2014.
