Hospital cleaner works his way up

WILGEHEUWEL - Young man grows his life career from rags to riches.

From just being a cleaner at Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital, Papi Kamudi’s ambition has landed him a better job in the hospital’s maintenance department.

While working for a private cleaning company which was contracted to the hospital, Kamudi said he always wanted to improve himself and move to a better job. “When the company’s contract expired, I remained behind working for another private company for about three years,” said Kamudi. He could not further his studies after his matric because of financial constraints and when the hospital advertised a post for a ward porter, he applied. “I am a self -motivated and confident person. When I received the news that my application was successful, I then told myself that I wanted to move further to another position,” he said.

When another outpatients porter post was advertised, he applied again and his application was again successful. “This new job afforded me better working hours than the previous one,” he added.

It was last year in June when the hospital advertised a post of an assistant in the maintenance department and, again his application was successful. Kamudi describes himself as a person who adjusts to any job easily and quickly. “I do not regard myself as a newcomer in any job but I learn the job, listen to instructions and perform according to the requirements,” he added.

He said his drive and passion in life is to stay tuned, even if he finds himself doing a job that does not satisfy him. “I just want to be myself and improve my life career.” He said his job description is to assist with the maintenance of the hospital.

“Kamudi showed enthusiasm to want to grow, which made it easy to empower him and give him the opportunity for growth, ” said hospital manager Jacques de Klerk.
