Eat dust: Local rider takes the win at motocross nationals

ROODEPOORT - Naudé proves his prowess in first-place finish in the second round of the Monster TRP National Motocross Series.

Roodepoort resident Sacha Naudé took a surprise victory in the second round of the Monster TRP Motocross national series in Cape Town.

Naudé’s motocross prowess earned him a jump up the ranks from MX2 class to MX1, the most competitive class, and a win by mere single points.

“The racing was intense and some of the best racing we have seen on a tough track,” Monster Energy spokesperson Sebastian Clay said.

“The level of the motocross is right up there with the best in the world. The event can be regarded as a major success, with an amazing atmosphere and great racing.”

A five-point margin separated Kerim Fitzgerald, Lloyd Vercueil, Michael Kok and Royce Griffin who finished second to fifth in that order. Ross Branch showed good form, but an injury to his thumb put him out of the final heat. The second round of the national motocross series started at the sandy Rover circuit, moving through the sands of the treacherous Melkbos track.

Melkbos is known as one of the roughest, most challenging tracks in SA and the riders knew they needed some serious horsepower.

The MX2 class was packed with close to 30 riders. Anthony Raynard went in as favourite on his home track, but it was Wyatt Avis, that won two of the three heats and took the overall win.

The MX3 class was a tight battle in the front between Roger Bergstrom and Jan Ryan. Both riders provided us with some tight racing. Jan had some bad luck leading one heat and dropping out with a puncture and leading another and crashing with only a lap to go. This left Roger to claim the win.

The next round heads to the ever impressive TEZA circuit near Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal.
