Cornelius Street bridge repair still pending
WELTEVREDEN PARK - Entity's need to decide on action plan before bridge can be repaired
Heavy rainstorms at the start of February had a negative impact on the ageing infrastructure of Weltevreden Park.
The biggest issue was the bridge over the river on Cornelius Street which lost its support structure due to the force of the water. Cracks on the road surface of the bridge also appeared.
Ward 126 councillor Mike Tonkin held an onsite meeting on 14 February with Region C director Mlamleli Belot and representatives of Johannesburg Water, City Power and the Johannesburg Roads Agency.
“We discussed the action plan and the issue was whether the roads agency or Joburg water would fix the bridge as a water pipe is in danger of being damaged as soon as the next storm arrives,” Tonkin said.
Resident Harry Potgieter from Oakfield Place complex which is located further down the road said the cracks in the road were starting to grow in size.
“The entity’s need to make a plan to come and repair the bridge as soon as possible as the surface above the bridge is unsupported,” he said.
Region C spokesperson Yolande Janse van Rensburg said Belot was still waiting for feedback and a action plan from all of the entity’s involved, and that repairs would start as soon as plans were drawn up.
“I urge motorists to use alternative roads and to avoid driving over the bridge until it has been repaired,” Tonkin warned.
