Learning in the new age

ROODEPOORT - Casino hands out big donation to school

Learning will never be the same for teachers and pupils at Laerskool Muldersdrift thanks to a generous donation from Silverstar Casino.

The casino donated R349 000 worth of computer equipment to the school in support of its technology project.

This project is adding to the school’s current equipment with data projectors for each classroom and laptops for every teacher from Grade 1 to Grade 7.

“We’re currently using interactive whiteboards and e-learning systems with great success in some classrooms, which enable learners to actively participate in the classroom and achieve a higher quality learning experience,” said the school’s principal, Herman Byleveld.

The casino’s Shane Collinson said, “We’re pleased that our donation will better the teaching and learning experience at the school and as many of the parents are supportive of our business, we’re proud to make a difference in their children’s education.”

Many pupils can’t afford the luxury of a computer or tablet. “Our goal is to familiarise them with current technology and also provide them with skills and opportunities outside the normal school modules,” added Byleveld. The equipment will assist pupils to acquire skills such as typing and the basic use of a computer. It will also facilitate various visual educational programmes. “We as teachers can achieve a quality teaching experience thanks to these technology aids,” he said.

The school, which celebrated its centenary in 2009, is a public primary school with 720 pupils from Grade 00 to 7 and caters to children in Muldersdrift and surrounding areas. It offers the standard academic curriculum and various sport activities. The school’s motto is ‘Do it now’, and with the new equipment the school can definitely live up to its motto.
