No need to light up the day

STRUBENS VALLEY - Streetlights burn day and night

Strubens Valley is the most well-lit suburb in the area.

Streetlights in Pennyweight, Rosebank and Sampler streets had been left on night and day for more than two months. A Pennyweight Street resident, who asked not to be named, said the lights had been left on as far back as October last year.

“On 14 November 2013, I laid a complaint with City Power after noticing the streetlights had been left on for a few weeks before November had even started,” said the resident. “Calling their call centre was a nightmare. I had to hang on for hours.”

City Power responded to the matter and stated that the problem had been fixed at the time of going to print.

City Power spokesperson Sydney Mphahlele said, “Technicians have again gone to the site to do an inspection and they are satisfied that the lights are no longer burning during the day.”

Yet it has not ended there. At the time of going to print, the Strubens Valley resident who laid the original complaint in November confirmed that the lights had indeed been switched off. “But they are now off permanently during the day and at night,” said the resident. “The irony is beyond me.”
