Bitten by the music bug

ROODEPOORT - Young singer goes solo and encourages aspiring newbies

Since he was a young boy, Roodepoort-born singer Justin Serrao has been passionate about singing.

“My earliest childhood memory of music was when I used to hear my uncle play his guitar in the kitchen during visits over weekends,” said Serrao. “I looked at him and I thought to myself, ‘I can also do this’.”

Clearly bitten by the music bug, Serrao began performing in battle of the bands competitions at the tender age of 13.

“The first band I joined was called 74%stupid. Then I moved onto a band called Grounded and I played bass guitar for them. We had a single with the title Getting Tired that did well nationwide on various radio stations.”

In 2010, Serrao joined the band Smash and Grab Hotspot. Although they did record an album it was never released because the band broke up. “We were heading in different directions and this is what caused the break-up.”

Serrao auditioned for Idols SA in 2011 and made the top 33. “Idols opened my eyes to solo performances and I decided to pursue a solo career.” He launched his solo debut album in 2012, Touching Toes Without Clothes. “I’m currently involved in the battle of the bands competitions and it’s my passion to see and help out young musicians that are starting out in the industry.”

He is currently working on his second solo album. “It should launch by the end of April, but I will update details of the launch on my website closer to the time.” Serrao said fans could follow him on his Twitter account @JustinSerrao or they can take a look at his website, www.JustinSerrao.com
