An operation carried out by police and Emergency Management Services to rescue illegal miners finally came to an end on 8 January. The incident was a result of clashes between rival groups and took place at the closed Shaft 58, just off Reid Street on Tuesday 6 January.

Two injured men have been hospitalised and one was found dead. A total of 65 people have been arrested.

The men will face charges of illegal mining, trespassing, theft of precious metals, and entering the country without proper documentation.
