Florida Canoe Club kicks off 2014
JOBURG - With just six weeks until the Dusi, there is no putting down the paddle.
Local canoeists will kick off the New Year with serious training in preparation for the world’s toughest endurance canoeing event, the Dusi, which takes place in mid-February.
The 2013 canoeing year finished up with a Dusi training race on Sunday 8 December, the final race of the Belloord series of races hosted by Florida Lake Canoe Club. The series ensured regular races with good attendance.
It included several compulsory races, which enabled qualifiers to be in the final draw where six boats were won, together with canoeing equipment, life jackets, a paddle, water drinking systems and spraydecks.
Mid-January will see a seriously tough two-day Dusi seeding race take place on the Jukskei River from the Lanseria airport area towards Hartebeespoort dam.
Six months ago Jerome Boulle from Florida introduced his friend Byron Sadler from Weltevreden Park to canoeing, and Sadler is loving every moment on the river, looking forward to each new challenge.
Having completed a successful Fish river marathon in October, the two are now training towards enjoying the Dusi event in February. They finished the 35km Belloord Dusi training race on the Klip river, which included three running portages, as the 25th double, in two hours 51 minutes.
