1965 – In the United Kingdom, a 70 mph speed limit was applied to all rural roads including motorways for the first time. Previously, there had been no speed limit.

1987 – In Zimbabwe, the political parties ZANU and ZAPU reach an agreement that ended the violence in the Matabeleland region known as the Gukurahundi.

1988 – South Africa, Cuba and Angola signed a formal peace agreement, allowing Namibian independence from South Africa.

The treaty, which was formally signed in New York City, provided for the phased withdrawal of an estimated 50 000 Cuban troops.

2001 – Richard C. Reid was dubbed the shoe bomber by the press after attempting to ignite explosives in his shoes while boarding an American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami.

Reid was subdued by flight attendants and fellow passengers and is currently serving multiple life sentences.
