A letter from Ward 114 Councillor Maureen Schneemann to her residents.
This year has been a very challenging yet peaceful year after the many protests that occurred in 2012. At least I can say that there has been a good working relationship between myself, the community and its respective leaders.
In 2013 we saw the new Zandspruit Primary School flourish. We even had to expand the school to cater for all the Grade 8 pupils. A new taxi rank was completed by the Provincial Roads Department, which will be opened in 2014.
Many thanks go out to the wonderful non-governmental organisations who have helped to continually uplift and support many of the community developments taking place throughout Zandspruit, for which I am truly and eternally grateful.
Foremost, however, I would like to thank the residents of Zandspruit. This past winter, five fires ravaged the homes of 24 families and community members were distraught. Local churches and businesses came to the fore and helped to collect blankets, food and clothing in aid of the victims. I have the biggest respect for these heroes.
We at Ward 114 are thrilled to work together with the resilient residents of Zandspruit , who carry on working together to make a difference in their communities and uplift the living conditions of all in their surrounding areas. They grow self-sustaining vegetable gardens, help the elderly, clean dumping areas and encourage all fellow residents to take pride in their communities.
An initiative I am very proud of is the ‘Liquor Traders against Crime’. All involved have worked relentlessly to bring a measure of control to Zandspruit. Leaks have been fixed by Joburg Water, Joburg Roads Agency have fixed potholes and jobs have been created through the water main, currently being constructed for Cosmo City.
Again, we thank all those caring and hardworking people who have given so much help in 2013, and hope that 2014 will also be a good year.
Sincere regards,
Ward 114 Councillor
Maureen Schneemann
