A pipe in a manhole on Snelskaats Street in Weltevreden Park has burst, resulting in litres of water flowing into a resident’s driveway. On 17 November Judy Read returned home to find her driveway flooded with water and her dogs soaking wet. “I came home and saw water everywhere and thought maybe it rained. After about an hour I realised it wasn’t rain, but was water flowing from the manhole.” The water had been flowing for approximately 12 hours.
“After contacting Roodepoort Emergency Services I was told they would send out a technician to have a look at the problem, but it is now 9am [the following day] and no one has come to have a look and we are the ones that pay for all this water,” Read said.
The manhole is situated in front of Read’s house on Snelskaats Street. Despite a very unpleasant situation, Read considers herself lucky as her house is built on a slope, and the water thus flows into the street, as opposed to into her home.
The Northsider has contacted Joburg Water but officials were not available for comment at the time of going to print.
