Cansa’s annual Relay For Life night walk
Survivors, family and friends gather at Monument High School.
WEST RAND – Cansa West Rand held their annual Relay For Life night walk at Monument High School in Krugersdorp on 1 November. More than 130 survivors attended, along with their loved ones.
Held in honour of cancer survivors and their families, the event saw teams of people taking turns walking around the school’s sports grounds from 6pm on Friday night until 6am the following morning. Cancer survivors took the first lap, symbolic of their victory over the dreaded disease. Eddy Rust, survivor and Bachelor of the Year finalist, walked with the group and gave over a motivational speech.
“As a survivor, I find it difficult to express the feelings that come with this ordeal and withering the storm that surrounds it. I have been living with cancer for a couple of years now. It gets to a point where it’s hard to remember what life was like without it. I look back and think: What a journey!” Rust said.
“I’ve learnt that humour can make even a very sick person smile. Especially on those days when you look in the mirror and see yourself with no hair or no colour to your skin, and you say to yourself: ‘Hel, maar jy lyk pretty smooth’,” he chuckled.
When the sun went down the Luminaria Ceremony took place, where candles were placed in bags along the track as a glowing tribute for friends and loved ones who have experienced or have lost the battle against cancer.
