Raid comes to a grinding halt
Motorist causes major accident when startled by convoy
On 31 October a joint task team comprising the Honeydew police, JMPD, Dunmar Security, BIC Security and Special Response Team planned on raiding the entire stretch of Hendrik Potgieter Road from Peter Road all the way up to Albert Road.
The raid was aimed at hawkers and loiters, but came to a sudden halt when the operation’s convoy of vehicles began crossing the T-junction at Nic Diedrichs. Police officers on the road directed traffic to slow down and make way for the convoy, however a female motorist in a white van got caught up in traffic and in a startled state attempted to cross the convoy. A major accident ensued in which the van’s passenger was severely wounded and a JMPD officer sustained minor injuries. Thereafter, traffic on Hendrik Potgieter Road was backed up for almost two hours.
Although the raid ended abruptly and the task team were unable to carry out the majority of the raid, five hawkers were arrested for trading without licenses and their goods were confiscated.
ER24 medics treated the injured passenger on scene before transporting him together with the JMPD officer to Leratong hospital.
