Gabriel van Wyk from Weltevreden Park and his friend, soon to be his Dusi partner, Christian van Eyssen – both Comrades runners – have set their sights on completing a Dusi river race, well-known as the world’s toughest endurance event, favouring strong runners over canoeists.

The friends have been attending learner sessions at Florida Lake for some months, practicing on the flat water, gaining confidence, improving technique, building muscle tone and becoming fitter, while their wives and children relax and enjoy a picnic, feed the ducks or play in the safe and secure locked grounds of the club.

New learners are advised to wear light thin clothing like nylon soccer tops/surfshorts, old thin soled takkies to protect feet from sharp rocks in case of a fall into the water, hats, sunscreen and a change of clothes. Learners must be able to swim in deep water where they can’t touch the bottom. Life jackets are provided.

Family members are welcome to come along to watch, picnic and take photos of the exciting and humorous activities. While refreshments will be on sale families are welcome to bring own picnic cooler box.

Canoeists can paddle on flat water dams and lakes in races, and many young children participate in the regular school league races. Those who are adventurous may want to learn river skills to be able to shoot rapids. Canoe Polo is a game with a ball and goals are scored as well as soccer-like techniques of tackle, defend and attack.

It is a superb sport for all age groups, as there is no stress on any one part of the body. Equal left and right side muscles are used and it is well-known to strengthen the core muscles to improve posture.

In the wake of the highly successful community project at Florida Lake, the club will be hosting open canoeing sessions as introductions to canoeing, free of charge, throughout November, on Sundays at 2 pm. Pre-arrangements would be preferred.
