International tax expert gives seminar in Ruimsig

An efficient and lawful tax system depends on tax payers and practitioners alike.

Tax practitioners as well as well taxpayers in and around Roodepoort attended a seminar on the new Tax Administration Act, which deals with the efficient and effective collection of revenue and the required procedures tax practitioners, tax payers and SARS have to adhere to. The seminar was presented by Professor Daniel Erasmus and the South African Institute of Tax Practitioners on 23 October.

Erasmus, who is an international tax specialist and lecturer, is chairman of the global Tax Risk Management group which is currently based in the United States. He is presently in South Africa to host 10 seminars across the country.

The seminar was held at the Black Eagle Guest House and Conference Centre in Ruimsig and covered many aspects of the act, which came into effect in October 2012.

“The aim of the seminar is to teach tax practitioners and payers alike about the complexities of the Tax Administration Act,” he stated. “We want them to not only to know exactly how to go about paying their respective taxes, but also about the responsibility of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) to be honest, fair and lawful within the confines of the constitution.”

Topics he covered revolved around what SARS obligations are in practice, taxpayers’ rights at the commencement of an audit and the issues with tax clearance certificates.
