Unlikely as it may seem, South Africa does indeed have a national ice hockey team. And even more unlikely, one of the players in the u/18 and u/20 teams is from Weltevreden Park.

Keagan Thornton has been playing ice hockey for the last five years and has even worn green and gold when he represented South Africa at the Ice Hockey World Championships held in Turkey last year. Keagan first started playing for the Sabres Ice Hockey Club based in Honeydew, but has since moved on to play for the Pretoria Capitals as their right wing player.

“It’s a fast, action filled sport,” said Thornton, upon being asked why he likes the sport. “It’s also unusual for it to be played in our country, that’s one of the big reasons I was drawn to it. My dad used play as well, so he got me into it.”
