Four weeks ago residents in Bergbron and Quellerina woke up to a new addition to the area – an illegal taxi rank on the corner of Gordon Road and Lange Street. Following this, Florida, Northcliff, Quellerina and Bergbron (FNQB) residents association has held a several meetings with relevant authorities to address the problem.
On Wednesday 26 September the association met with JMPD and security companies operating in both areas, and a representative from JMPD promised they would monitor the situation. Challenges were discussed and suggestions were made.
“It was decided that a more direct intervention to block access to the area should be pursued by placing rocks in strategic places around the corner of Lange Street and Gordon Road”, explained Louis Grobler, chairman of Security In Practise (SIP). “The idea is to prevent access to the area entirely.”
Although it appears to be a viable short-term solution, the placing of rocks to block access will raise the question of illegal dumping. It was also suggested the the vacant land be used as a park, but owing to City by-laws and City Council approval, this could take some time.
While the issue of the informal taxi rank drags on with more meetings planned in the coming weeks, taxis continue to utilise the space and residents fear that this will become a permanent feature. Okkie Nel, director at Best Secure security said he is concerned the taxi rank might bring crime to the area. “In the past we’ve come across criminals using taxis to transport stolen goods and we fear that the rank will be used to pursue such activities.”
Despite all the challenges residents of Bergbron and Quellerina are prepared to make every effort possible to ensure that their area is as safe and aesthetically appealing as possible.
In addition to the problem at large, it was discovered that an individual is taking advantage of the situation. This individual has allegedly told taxi drivers he owns the land and is demanding rent in order for them to use the vacant land. “Someone with crook entrepreneurial skills is issuing taxis with licences to park and use the land as a taxi rank,” said Grobler.
A subcommittee has been elected and will be in talks with the taxi association to discuss how to best resolve the situation.
