Robbers nabbed in Wilgehewuel

Neglected park encourages rise in crime

In the early hours of Sunday 22 September Wilgeheuwel resident and Home Owners Association security head Petro Engelbrecht received a call informing her of a robbery taking place at Nashira Complex on Lubbe Rouge Street, Wilgeheuwal.

Engelbrecht immediately alerted Dunmar Security who responded swiftly and arrived on the scene shortly thereafter.

When the robbers became aware of the security company’s presence they began firing shots and one officer was shot in the leg. Police arrived shortly afterwards and two of three robbers were arrested. Engelbrecht attributed the successful arrests to the dedicated team work of residents, Dunmar Security and police.

Engelbrecht is concerned about the number of break-ins in the area and blames the neglected park next to their complex for suburb’s escalating crime statistics. “Criminals hide easily in the reeds, we have tried on numerous occasions to get City Parks to come clean the park but they never respond to our emails and the park is never cleaned”, said Engelbrecht.
