Gateway School hosted a golf fun day on 20 September and were joined by coaches from Jim and Jerry’s Driving Range.
Guided by South African Disabled Golf Association member Udo Mohr, who has represented South Africa at the Dutch Open golf competition in the past, students were given a practical lesson in this world-wide and ever-growing ball sport. Mohr’s disability is classified as Les Autres, a term used to describe athletes with a range of conditions which result in locomotive disorders. Despite his challenge, Mohr has competed in an array of sports, including discus, javelin, shot put, cycling, and wheelchair basketball.
Steven Blacklock, owner of Jim and Jerry’s Driving Range, organised the fun day at Gateway with a view to identify children who display a talent for the sport; children who, like Mohr, can be coached to one day reach their full potential. “We want these kids to not only enjoy golf, but excel in it like Udo has”, said Blacklock.
