The Dei Amoris Church in Weltevreden Park has reached out to the community of Vrededorp.

The church visited Jan Hofmeyer Community Services, a non-profit organisation registered with the Department of Social Development. The church members donated essentials like clothing and blankets.

Jan Hofmeyer currently provides one cooked meal per weekday to 147 children, 100 senior citizens and 103 unemployed or destitute people. The service operates entirely through volunteers.

A pre-school has been established to aid the children’s skills development in preparation for Grade One.

In addition to this they have a computer learning centre.

The children also attend the “Jannies club”, a monthly meeting facilitating teamwork, a sense of belonging and self-worth. It also exposes children to ethical norms and values of society at large.

Limited entertainment and recreational activities are arranged for the children during school holidays. The elderly are not forgotten and they are treated to refreshments, cake and music at a “Senior’s tea” every month. Clothing and blankets are distributed and trauma assistance is given in cases of illness and death in the community.

Jan Hofmeyer Community Services is totally dependent on public support and assistance from the business sector to enable them to provide these services on an on-going basis.

Anyone who would like to assist with food, clothing, blankets or any other items should contact Dei Amoris.
