Motocross draws fans
ROODEPOORT - South Africa wins prestigious cup after a hard day's racing
On 1 September the 2013 Motocross of African Nations took place at one of the oldest motorcycle circuits in Gauteng, the Syringa Park Motocross Track.
Hundreds of spectators from across the continent flocked to the circuit to watch 110 riders from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, Angola, and Botswana battle it out for the prestigious trophy. A tense atmosphere hung over the circuit as competitors prepared their bikes for the race.
Three junior classes (MX50, MX65, and MX Lites) kicked off the day, followed by the three senior classes (MX 125, MX2 and MX1) as well as the extremely competitive ladies class, and finally the veterans class.
South Africa began racking up the points by winning overall in the 125 high school class. They pushed through all the way until the final race – the veterans class – when Zambia took first place.
Monster Energy spokesperson Sebastian Clay said, “It was great to see a ladies development class for the first time at the event. It was won by Ruimsig rider Brittany Cuthbert. She also hopes to win the Africa MX of Nations that will take place in Zambia in 2014.”
South Africa won the cup and won in all classes barring the veterans.
“This proves that we are still the no. 1 motocross nation in Africa, but with the way the talent is developing in other nations, we will have to work hard to keep the
trophy going forward,” concluded Clay.
