It might not be as big as television’s Idols, but Maragon Private School’s Idols competition is on its way to becoming an annual event – and it is going to be big; sponsors and all; organiser Annelise Botha said.

“Pupils from other schools are just as keen to enter our Idols. A lot of people came forward to tell us they would like to support us.”

Botha said the first Maragon Idols competition was a great success.

Loads of energy, excitement and enthusiasm combined with tons of talent characterised the first competition that took place on 20 July.

Pupils from Grade 1 to Grade 7 took part in the first round of the competition in the Maragon Grand Hall.

They performed in front of an audience and a panel of four adjudicators. From this group, ten finalists qualified to compete in the final round. Here the pupils performed for a panel of six renowned adjudicators.

Botha said there were two rounds and ten finalists were selected:

Tylo Venter (Grade 4), Khwezi Nyawose (Grade 4), Vanessa Hirschmann (Grade 5), Cailin Van Tonder (Grade 6), Lyara Venter (Grade 7), Owethu Mabaso (Grade 6), Caleb Brown (Grade 4), Tiara Groenewald, Emma Jacobs, Rachel Jacobs and Rachel Pereira (Grade 3 group item), Jenna Gillingham (Grade 6) and Oluchi Agim (Grade 5).

All ten items were impressive and the adjudicators had a tough time placing each of the competitors. Finally, after a long discussion and objective assessment of every performance, the final decision was reached. The talented Vanessa Hirschmann came in third position and Cailin van Tonder and Oluchi Agim shared first place.

“Maragon pupils are now suitably inspired by this great event and are already planning and looking forward to the next Idols competition,” Botha said.
