Shootout at student residence complex

Students and residents at the Campus NYC complex in Ruimsig were once again the victims of crime when a shootout took place between robbers and security guards.

A guard at the complex became suspicious when he saw two men lurking at the bottom fence  in the early hours of 12 August.

As he approached the suspects, they fired two shots at the guard, fortunately missing him. He returned fire and, according to witnesses, purportedly shot one of the suspects in the back. The suspects still managed to flee the scene, however, but a plasma screen TV was recovered at the cut-off electric fence.

“It’s the third time we have been burgled in two years,” said the unit owner whose home had been broken into, requesting not to be named in fear of his family’s safety. “Had it not been for the security guard, the robbers could have taken everything, or hurt my family again.” He thanked the body corporate, and security company Dunmar for their swift response.

Questioned about security measures and structures to ensure residents’ safety, the body corporate commented that Dunmar security had been appointed to guard the complex following previous cases and that safety had improved.
