Give blood, give life

JOBURG - SANBS needs your help in saving lives this festive season, and always.

Blood. South Africa needs yours, never more so than this time of year.

Donating blood is a simple procedure that when done on a regular basis, can save countless lives. Unfortunately, South Africa has more receivers of the national blood stock, than it has donors.

With the carnage on the roads in the festive season, there is no better time to donate than now. The holiday season death toll stands to be reduced significantly if injured victims can receive blood they’ve lost during an accident. This is sadly not the case for many of these victims due to the increasing blood shortage we experience in South Africa. The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) currently holds only 2.9 days’ worth of blood in stock.

Blood can be donated every 56 days, but a unit of blood can only last for 42 days after donation, thus the dire need for regular donors. It is not only beneficial for the receiver, but the donor as well, as the body produces fresh new blood after donating. SANBS has eight donation stations across South Africa, so if you know of one in the vicinity you’re visiting in these holidays, why not do something special and give the gift of life by donating blood.
