A query about our post offices

Puzzled Louise from Honeydew writes:

I have friends who don’t have email so every now and then I write them a letter. But this has become a huge problem these days, as the post office does NOT have stamps. They have a sticky piece of paper that says local or international.

Last week, when I asked if I could buy two stamps to enclose with a letter to a friend to assist him, the postal official told me the following: “We don’t sell individual stamps – if you want to buy two stamps you would have to buy a book of 100 stamps costing R450”.

This is a puzzle to be sure. Needless to say, I could not assist my friend with enclosing two stamps. Plus my letters to the Eastern Cape now take six weeks.

Are my letters going on a scenic route? Or are they just sitting in the post office waiting to be sorted at a time most convenient to the sorter? Be it in one week’s time or longer?

The Northsider/ Record has contacted the Post Office for comment, and as soon as it is received, it will be published — Ed.
