Burnt and abandoned at the corner of Moepel
The owner was identified by JMPD and was served with a seven-day notice
A burnt-out motor vehicle (make and model unknown), on the corner of Amyrillis Drive and Moepel Road in Roodekrans caught the attention of residents.
Janie Venter Meintjies, who lives close by, commented on Facebook, “We heard a thump sound. When we ran upstairs we saw the car was burning. The guy got out but ran away. We gave our hosepipe to hose down the car until the fire brigade showed up to extinguish the flames on the tyres. The owner of the car lives nearby, but when he was called, he was either not at home or did not answer.”

She also mentioned in her post that she contacted both the ward councillor and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department to enquire about removing the vehicle, as it attracted unwanted attention. “The answer received from both the councillor and JMPD was the same – it was the owner’s responsibility to remove the vehicle,” she wrote.
The owner was identified by JMPD and served with a seven-days notice to remove the vehicle.
The JMPD spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar, said the owner of an abandoned vehicle will be given a notice to remove it from the scene. “If the vehicle is not removed within seven days, we will remove and impound it. If the owner comes to collect it, a fine will be assigned to the owner to pay before he can collect to vehicle. If the owner does not collect it, the vehicle will become state property,” he said.
