Word of the day

The word of the day for 13 January is: individuality.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines individuality as a separate existence; the quality or character that distinguishes people or things from something of the same kind.

Dr. Seuss wrote, “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” In his unique writing style based around rhymes, he wrote another beautiful line about embracing your individuality. Today you are you, that is truer than true, there is no one alive, who is youer than you.”

Society preaches conformity, but we need to embrace what makes us different. There is no one like you; you can do and see things in ways that other people can’t and are valuable in your own unique way. We need to be brave enough to stand out and wave our freak flags because they are what make us who we are and make us all incredibly special.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”

Despite what you have been taught and what you have been told, there may not always be one right way to do things. We should look to constantly grow and improve, to find new solutions that can be more of an asset. No project is ever complete, only forgotten or accepted. We need to be constantly trying to improve, because what one person sees, you may see in a different light that and it can make a tangible change.

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche said, “You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist.”
