The Oxford English Dictionary defines ‘beauty’ as a combination of qualities that pleases the aesthetic senses or intellect.
The first thing that comes to mind when someone says the word ‘beauty’ is physical appeal, but beauty goes beyond that. Helen Keller said that the best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart.
We forget that sometimes beauty isn’t only referring to how appealing someone or something looks, but also to how it can make people feel. There is a beauty in things that make people think and question what they thought they knew; there is a beauty in passion and in love; there is beauty in almost everything. Frank Lloyd Wright said, “The longer I live the more beautiful life becomes. If you foolishly ignore beauty, then you will soon find yourself without it. Your life will be impoverished. But if you invest in beauty, it will remain with you all the days of your life.”
Physical beauty fades; someone will not always look the way they do now, the true beauty is found in who they are, how they treat others and the way they act. Someone can be the most attractive person in the world, but if they do not have a good personality, it becomes harder to see their physical beauty. Khalil Gibran said, “Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart”.
Aim for beauty within yourself first, then the outside will follow. Appreciate the beautiful things in the world; the rainbows, flowers, animals, art, and people’s passions. If you can find the beauty in everything, happiness is a lot easier to keep a hold of.
